Overview

Evo Tile & Stone is a Sydney tile and stone retailer that opened on the Northern Beaches in 2005, with a showroom in Seaforth and delivery across Australia. Growth Digital moved the store from WooCommerce to Shopify, redesigned it around how people actually shop for tile, and built a calculator into the product page that turns the size of a room into the number of boxes to order.

The challenge

Tile is priced per square metre but sold by the box, and that mismatch is where online tile orders tend to go wrong. A customer measures a floor in square metres, then has to work out how many boxes cover it, how much to add for off-cuts and breakages, and what the total will be. Get it wrong in one direction and they order too little and risk a batch mismatch on a reorder; get it wrong in the other and they pay for tile they don’t need.

Evo’s catalogue is also large and varied. Shoppers browse by colour, room, style, material and size, so the new store needed to make that browsing quick as well as accurate, without losing the design-led feel the brand is known for.

Our approach

We treated the migration, the redesign and the calculator as one project rather than three. Moving to Shopify gave Evo a managed platform to build on. The design and conversion work then focused on the points where a tile buyer hesitates: choosing a variant, working out how much to buy, and feeling confident enough to place the order.

Rather than bolt a generic quantity box onto the page, we built the calculation into the product itself, so the maths follows whichever tile and size the customer has selected.

The solution

The store runs on a custom Shopify theme, with the calculator sitting directly on the tile product page. A customer enters the area they need to cover in square metres and is shown the number of boxes required and the subtotal, with quantities always rounded up to a full box.

  • WooCommerce to Shopify migration of the product catalogue and store.
  • Area-based calculator that converts square metres into the number of boxes to order.
  • Box coverage held against each product variant, so the calculation follows the tile selected.
  • An optional wastage allowance of 0% or 15%, with 15% recommended and a prompt if a customer chooses none.
  • Pricing shown both per square metre and per box.
  • A redesigned storefront and navigation for browsing by colour, room, style, material and size.
  • Conversion-focused changes across the product and collection pages.

The results

The unit a customer thinks in and the unit the store sells are now reconciled on the product page itself. Instead of leaving to do the arithmetic elsewhere, a customer can go from the size of their room to a quantity and a price in one step, with a sensible allowance for off-cuts built in.
