Magento to Shopify Plus Migration

Magento to Shopify Plus migration case study visual for Eroma ecommerce platform migration

Overview

Eroma, an Australian candle and soap-making supplies retailer — fragrance oils, wax, wicks and accessories sold to hobbyist makers and wholesale businesses across the country — had outgrown Magento. Growth Digital planned and executed a full migration to Shopify Plus, moving the catalogue, wholesale customer accounts, tiered B2B pricing and complete order history across without taking the store offline.

The problem

Running Eroma’s store on Magento meant carrying the platform’s full infrastructure and maintenance overhead directly — hosting, custom extensions, security patching and ongoing development all sat with the business rather than the platform itself. Between hosting, maintenance and the extension stack needed to keep a Magento store this size running, Eroma was spending close to $25,000 a month before a single marketing dollar went out the door — and with Adobe’s extended security support for Magento closing, that overhead was only going to grow.

Our approach

Rather than a straight lift-and-shift, we audited every extension and custom module actually running the store first, then mapped Eroma’s product catalogue, attribute sets and wholesale customer groups to their Shopify Plus equivalents before a single product moved. The Magento store stayed live and taking orders throughout — we built the new Shopify Plus store in parallel and rehearsed the full cutover on a staging environment before the real one.

The solution

We rebuilt the store on Shopify Plus from the ground up — full product catalogue and variant structure migrated, wholesale customer accounts and tiered B2B pricing carried across, and every existing URL 301-redirected so search rankings held.

  • Full catalogue, attribute and variant migration
  • Wholesale customer groups and tiered B2B pricing migrated
  • Complete order history transferred
  • 301 redirect map for every existing URL — no lost rankings
  • Legacy Magento extensions replaced with native Shopify Plus features

The results

The clearest number here isn’t a traffic chart — it’s what Eroma stopped paying. Hosting, maintenance and the extension stack that came with running Magento cost roughly $25,000 a month; on Shopify Plus, that’s down to around $4,000 a month — an 84% drop in ongoing platform costs, with none of the security patching or infrastructure management self-hosted Magento demanded.
